About
I study materials and design in medical devices, especially the mechanical properties and wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene as used in joint anthropology. My thesis specifically looks at the how the different types of cross-shear motions in total knee replacements (2D sliding, rolling, and rotation) effect the wear rate and micro-structural orientation of the polyethylene. I simulate different combinations motion and mimic the fundamental aspects of contact in the knee using a custom multi-directional tribo-system that I designed and built.
