About

I received my Bachelor degree in Urban Design from Ain-Shams University and my Masters degree in Architecture from Cairo University, Egypt.
I am a licensed architect in my home country Egypt where I practiced as a freelancer for five years. I was involved in the design of the American University in Cairo (AUC) new campus, High Technology Institute (HTI) in Menya new campus, and many other smaller projects. Concurrently, I was teaching at the Department of Architecture at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology (AAST).
I enrolled in the PhD program at UC Berkeley in Fall 2005. My major is in Design Theories and Methods (Advisor: Yehuda Kalay) and my minors are in Anthropological Archeology (Advisor: Ruth Tringham) and in the History of Art (Advisor: Whitney Davis). My research interest is in virtual reconstruction of places. I am especially interested in the perception of place, place and memory, heritage, virtuality, representation and meaning.
I became a PhD candidate in Spring 2008. Members of my dissertation committee are: Yehuda Kalay (Architecture), Andrew Shanken (Architecture) and Whitney Davis (History of Art).
I am a Designated Emphasis student at the Berkeley Center for New Media and a member of the Digital Design Research Group (DDRG). I am a fellow of UC Berkeley Summer Institute for Preparing Future Faculty and the former chair of the International Students Affair Committee (ISAC) of UC Berkeley Graduate Assembly.
